4 Easy Ways to be an Eco-Friendly Dog Parent

April 22 is Earth Day, a time to celebrate and honor the Earth whilst finding new and better ways to live more eco-friendly. If you’re a dog parent perhaps you’re wondering what sustainability has to do with caring for your pup. The reality is that sustainability needs to reach every corner of our lives to be effective. Sustainability is important to us at WholeDogz as it usually goes hand-in-hand with natural living. Keep reading to find out 5 easy ways to be an eco-friendly dog parent this Earth Day!

1. Feed your dog healthy and natural food
Earth Day aside, there are numerous reasons why your pup benefits from healthy and natural food rather than simple dog kibble. Like people, your dog is what it eats and unfortunately, a lot of dog kibble is made with diseased animals and other awful ingredients. Switching to a brand that uses human-grade meat is not only better for your dog’s health, but it’s also better for the environment. Many natural or raw dog food brands source their meat from local farmers, which helps cut down on the massive carbon footprint caused by factory farming.

2. Avoid chemicals
Chemical-filled products are harmful to the environment. The Earth has already provided us with the ingredients your pup needs to be healthy. Opting for natural supplements and medicines, rather than chemical supplements, better supports your dog’s health and the environment. Additionally, choose shampoos and conditioners made with natural ingredients. Many of them also help keep fleas and ticks away (link). There are a variety of products listed in our store that are free of parabens, synthetic chemicals, insecticides or pesticides, perfumes, and dyes. Better for your pup and better for the Earth!

3. Shop Local or Shop Smart
Shopping local is a great sustainability rule in general and can be applied to your dog’s shopping list as well! Granted this can be a bit more difficult given the current situation of the world, but if you’re able to, shopping locally helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping and transportation. If you’re local to the area, we’re happy to say that we’re currently offering buy online and pick up in-store on all of our items! But you can also shop smart -- buy buying from small businesses instead of Big Box stores. Whole Dogz uses recycled shipping boxes and the smallest box or envelope we can - no large box deliveries for a tiny item from us! And we ship via the US Postal Service which itself is going green with the addition of electric vehicles!

4. Shop Mindfully
The final tip for becoming an eco-friendly dog parent is to shop mindfully. Whole Dogz looks for toys and even beds that are made with recycled materials taking plastic bottles out of circulation and into products that can themselves be recycled once used up. We also look for toys made in the US and a special bonus if they are from women-owned businesses! And some of the dog food we sell, such as Open Farm, recycles its bags, helping to give back to the earth. Finally, Whole Dogz sells poop bags that are better for the earth, breaking down more quickly in landfills than the large store-bought variety.

The Earth Provides
Earth Day isn’t just about making eco-friendly choices. It’s about recognizing how the Earth already provides everything we and our dogs need to live content lives. From nutritious food to playing in a park, the Earth provides for us. Even just seeing how excited some dogs get over finding a stick can help us understand this truth. Recognizing that makes it easier to transition to natural ingredients and products for your dog. People and dogs are a part of nature and the Earth. So join Whole Dogz in celebrating Earth Day, and make sure to make it a happy one for your pup and the Earth!
